A Guide to Playing Mixed Games

Mixed games offer an excellent way to hone one’s poker skills and increase profit potential. While many concepts will carry over from Hold ’em to Omaha Hi/Lo, there are a few essential principles which need to be understood to successfully play these games.

Mastering Mixed Games is an essential read for players starting out in mixed games. Dylan Linde, an award-winning tournament player in both No-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha at WSOP tournaments, offers his expertise.

1. Adaptability

As soon as a novice enters a poker room, they are often met by tables filled with various game types – some might prefer No Limit Hold’em while others want new challenges that will enhance their gameplay experience.

Popular games in Omaha Hi/Lo and mixed game formats include Stud High/Low, Razz and draw variants such as Badugi and Deuce to Seven Triple Draw. These are often included as additional variations to Omaha.

These games usually use a pot-limit betting structure, unlike no-limit Texas Hold’em. Furthermore, players can learn a variation of Omaha called PLO which features six hole cards per hand for even more starting hand combinations compared to its standard four card counterpart. The book provides comprehensive details on these various games’ functions and strategies required to win; an indispensable read for any serious player looking to expand their knowledge.

2. Strategy

Strategic thinking in mixed games is of utmost importance, particularly Hold-em where exploiting small edges frequently is key, while Omaha demands exploiting larger ones less frequently.

Mastery of certain games within a mixed game rotation gives experienced players an edge against less experienced and moderate players, creating an enjoyable and stimulating addition to cash online poker tournaments and cash online poker games.

At any HORSE rotation or one of the many mixed game tournaments and cash games on offer today, players need to be able to think critically and make informed decisions regarding the game at hand. Doing this can give you an edge over opponents and increase your success as a poker player; for example correctly viewing scooping odds in 5-card stud-o and making adjustments accordingly; understanding basic strategies of razz, 2-7 triple draw, badugi and other variations is equally essential.

3. Position

Omaha and Stud can appear daunting for players coming from Hold’em, but their fundamentals are actually quite straightforward. Winning at drawing-based games such as Omaha or Stud requires altering your positional and bluffing strategies accordingly in order to succeed in these more advanced forms of poker.

Omaha poker requires each player to use four hole cards rather than two to make a hand that wins the pot, using them with three board cards in conjunction with betting rules similar to no-limit hold’em and community card deals in an identical fashion.

Many novice players make the mistake of approaching Omaha like a river game and waiting until after the flop to call any bet that comes their way. While Omaha is a drawing game and quartered hands may occur naturally, this style of play will ultimately cost more in terms of winning percentage over time. To improve winning odds over time it is much better to read your opponents’ hands closely while keeping in mind whether your own hand might qualify as a nut low hand – this approach should see your winning percentage soar!

4. Bluffing

Bluffing is an integral component of any poker strategy, yet can be difficult to master. To be effective at it, however, requires much deception, including manipulating timing and covering tells from opponents. Experienced players will take into account both psychological considerations of bluffing as well as risk/reward ratios when planning their strategy for this tactic.

Considerations must be given to how likely opponents are to fold to aggressive play, betting patterns and history when making your decision as to when and how best to bluff. Pot size and table image also play a part.

A good bluffing bet size should match that of your value bets to avoid giving away your deception to opponents. When selecting your bluffing bet size, take into account both player count and stack depth as this provides greater opportunities for bluffing; however, only attempt bluffing when there’s a reasonable chance it will work successfully.
